Our Favorite Dining Options
Taos has GREAT restaurants. Delve into Mexican or New Mexican cuisine.
Here are our recommendations.
Orlandos
Hip Mexican and New Mexican. You will be dazzled by the colors of the building, then check out the menu. You can select your level of spiciness.
Address: 1.8 miles north of Taos plaza on the left (as you are going north).
Phone:751-1450
Old Blinking Light
This place is for meat lovers. Steaks, bar-b-que, chicken, etc. Nice atmosphere and very good food. Oh, if you like wine there is a wine store in the restaurant that features some 100 different wines from around the world.
Address: Highway 150. Go north to the "blinking" light and take a right on 150. Just past the Quail Ridge Inn on your left hand side.
Phone: 776-8787
Drinks and Appetizers
Two places come to mind instantly.
The Historic Taos Inn
A block north of the plaza. The best margaritas you will ever have.
Anaconda Bar
317 kit Carson road
At El Monte Sagrado you will love the giant snake running over your head (its not real) as you watch fish in a giant acquarium!
Hiking
Go up route 64 just a few miles past town where the road starts to curve and head up the mountain, and you will see several trail heads with parking just by the road. The one on your left does a nice long loop, but is a little steep. For a longer, more scenic hike youll want to head up to Taos Ski Area and behind the ski area there are several nice trails including one to climb Whittaker mountain the tallest mountain in New Mexico!
River Rafting
Lots of choices but I have enjoyed Far Flung Adventures several times. They leave from Pilar which is about a half hour south of Taos. Everything from complete beginner to quasi-expert and even solo ducky kayaks.

Museums and Attractions
Well, what can I say? I believe Taos has more art galleries and museums per capita than any other town in the world. Museums that offer art, history and culture. From the house you can easily walk to at least four museums.
Taos Pueblo
For centuries home to the Tiwa Indians. Its a wonderful experience to learn and experience the history, see a very old church, enter the homes and shops of Tiwas who still live at the pueblo. Every map shows you how to get there, basically you take a left out of the driveway, go left again at Camino de la Placita. At the light take a right towards town and then at the first gas station take a left. About two miles.

Wonderful home/galleries/gift store. The collection encompasses native American pottery and weavings as well as paintings. Very nice. Head toward the blinking light but just before take a left hand turn at the sign.
Hacienda de los Martinez
Lower Ranchitos Road
758-1000
This very historic building is an entire compound with courtyard, iron working area, living quarters, kitchen, etc. The location is also quite beautiful. From Valverde you can take a right out of the driveway and keep going until you hit a T intersection. Here go right until you hit the museum
Kit Carson Home
113 Kit Carson Road

Kit Carson had a major influence on the history and folklore of the West. This is where he lived!
Parks
Want a nice evening walk? Try either the Kit Carson Park, which is downtown, or the Fred Baca park about a five minute drive from the house.
